How Long Can a 36V or 48V LED Strip Run From One Power Feed?

There is no universal maximum run length for every 36V or 48V LED strip. The permitted distance depends on the exact circuit design, power per meter, PCB resistance, constant-current regulator operating range, cable size, ambient temperature, IP construction and acceptable end-of-run brightness variation.

Compared with a similar lower-voltage design, a higher DC voltage can reduce operating current and conductor losses. Constant-current regulation may help manage current along the strip, but it does not eliminate voltage drop or guarantee identical brightness at every point.

LONG-RUN PROJECT PLANNING

When Should You Specify a 36V or 48V Long-Run LED Strip?

A 36V or 48V long-run LED strip should be considered when a commercial lighting project requires an extended linear installation and reducing intermediate power-feed points may simplify the system. Higher DC voltage and on-strip current regulation can help manage conductor losses, but neither guarantees a fixed run length or identical brightness from end to end.

Extended Linear Layouts

A validated long-run platform may reduce the number of intermediate power-feed points required for corridors, coves and continuous architectural light lines.

Engineering check:

Confirm total length, W/m or W/ft, one-end or two-end feed, cable distance, allowable voltage drop and permitted start-to-end brightness variation.

Limited Power-Feed Access

Fewer feed locations may simplify projects where additional power cables, drivers or maintenance access points are difficult to place.

Engineering check:

Review driver location, cable gauge, voltage at the strip input, service access, circuit protection and local installation requirements.

Defined Start-to-End Performance

On-strip constant-current regulation can help maintain LED current while the supply voltage remains within the regulator’s designed operating range.

Engineering check:

Measure start and end voltage, regulator headroom, light output variation, PCB temperature and performance under the proposed load and ambient conditions.

OEM/ODM System Integration

Lighting brands, fixture manufacturers and project suppliers can evaluate the LED strip, power supply, cable, connector, reel length and packaging as one coordinated system.

Engineering check:

Approve the exact model, wiring plan, test conditions, performance tolerance, sample, certification coverage and manufacturing route before mass production.

“48V” Is a Voltage Platform, Not a Run-Length Guarantee

A published maximum run length is incomplete unless it identifies the exact model, power per meter or foot, PCB construction, cable size, ambient temperature, IP construction, power-feed method and permitted voltage or brightness variation.

At the same electrical power, increasing voltage from 24V to 48V reduces operating current. This can reduce resistive losses in conductors, but it does not eliminate voltage drop or automatically guarantee lower LED temperature.

One-end and two-end power-feed results must be stated separately. A two-end feed length must not be presented as a single-end capability.

For model evaluation, provide the required total length, light type, voltage, W/m or W/ft, installation environment, cable distance, preferred feed method and acceptable end-of-run variation.

24V vs 48V Systems

At the same electrical power, increasing the system voltage from 24V to 48V reduces current by approximately half. Lower current can reduce resistive losses in conductors and PCB traces, but it does not automatically reduce LED junction temperature or guarantee a fixed run length.

24V

The Industry Standard

Highly versatile for general architectural lighting. However, inherent PCB resistance causes noticeable brightness degradation over distances.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of power supply does the super long constant current LED strip need?

It requires a standard constant voltage power supply (24V, 36V, or 48V depending on the strip model). The constant current ICs on the strip itself handle the current regulation. Do NOT use a constant current driver.

Can the super long constant current LED strip be dimmed?

Yes, they are fully dimmable. They support PWM dimming methods including 0-10V, DALI, and TRIAC via compatible PWM controllers or dimmable power supplies. For optimal performance, a PWM frequency ≤ 2kHz is recommended.

What are the longest LED strip lights available?

With a single-end power input, our 48V constant current strips can reach 50 meters. If you power the strip from both ends (looping the power), you can achieve continuous runs of up to 100 meters without visible voltage drop.
